Sunrise Sports & Entertainment announced today that the Florida Panthers are first in the Southeast Division and No. 3 in the Eastern Conference with 48 points in 41 games, the halfway point of the 2011-12 NHL season.
 
The Cats begin the second half of the season tonight when they host the defending Western Conference champion Vancouver Canucks at 7:30 p.m. at the BankAtlantic Center. The Canucks game kicks off a three-game homestand that also includes games against Pittsburgh on Friday, Jan. 13 and Boston on Monday, Jan. 16. All three games will be broadcast live on FOX Sports Florida and Sports Radio 560 WQAM. Tickets for the games are available by calling 954-835-PUCK or logging on to Ticketmaster.com.
 
Florida currently leads the Southeast Division by three points over Winnipeg and four points over Washington. Through the first 41 games the Panthers have been led by forwards Kris Versteeg (17-21-38), Tomas Fleischmann (15-19-34) and Stephen Weiss (11-22-33), defensemen Brian Campbell (3-30-33), Dmitry Kulikov (3-17-20) and Jason Garrison (11-7-18), and goaltender Jose Theodore (14-8-4, .918 save percentage, 2.43 GAA).

HEAD-TO-HEAD: Florida and Vancouver meet for their only contest of the season. The Panthers have lost three straight overall games to the Canucks in regulation, last winning in a 4-3 shootout victory on home ice Feb. 1, 2008.
 
TRADE PARTNERS: Monday’s contest marks the first meeting between the teams since a major trade on Oct. 22, in which Florida acquired Mikael Samuelsson and Marco Sturm from Vancouver in exchange for David Booth, Steven Reinprecht and Vancouver’s third round selection in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft (previously acquired by Florida in Feb. 2011 along with Evan Oberg for Chris Higgins).

41 DONE, 41 TO GO:
The Panthers start the second half of their season holding a 20-13-8 record, Florida’s best start to the season since going 24-11-3-3 in 1999-2000.
 
FIRST-PLACE CATS: Florida’s 48 points lead Winnipeg for the Southeast Division lead by three points. Florida has been No. 1 in its division for 51 straight days (end of 11/19) and 54 days on the season. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the last time the Panthers were first place in their division this late in a season was through 68 games on March 10, 2000. With a 36-22-5-5 record, Florida was tied with Washington with 82 points, but ranked first in the division because of one more win (36-35) with the same number of games played.

HOME SWEET HOME:
Florida is 8-2-2 in its last 12 home games and has points in 15 of 19 home games this season (10-4-5). Florida has also hosted three straight sellouts of 20,000-plus fans and has averaged an attendance of 16,474 fans through its first 19 home games. The Panthers return to home ice having lost a season-high six straight road games (0-3-3).
 
PLENTY OF SOUP FOR YOU: Brian Campbell has a three-game assist streak (0-3-3), his fourth three-game point streak of the season. He has six assists in his last five games and nine points (1-8-9) in his last nine games. He is T-3rd among all NHL players with 30 assists this season and has 33 points in 41 games, already six more points than he recorded last season (5-22-27 in 65 games).
 
THE INFIRMARY: The Panthers currently have five players on the sidelines with injury and have lost 158 man games to injury this season. Marcel Goc and Mikael Samuelsson returned to the lineup Thursday and both have two-game point streaks since their return, Samuelsson netting three points (1-2-3) and Goc recording two points (1-1-2).
 
COOLING KRIS: Despite a season-high, four-game streak without points, Kris Versteeg leads Florida and ranks T-20th in the NHL with 38 points (17-21-38) in 40 games this season. He’s closing in on his career high of 53 points (22-31-53), set in 78 games withChicago in 2008-09.
 
G-52 BOMBER: Jason Garrison leads all NHL defensemen with 11 goals this year. All of his goals have come on slapshots from the point and the Panthers are 8-1-2 when he notches a goal. He leads the team with seven PPG this year after totaling just seven goals in his career entering this season (113 games, 2009-11). He has 18 points (11-7-18) through 41 games, already matching his full-season career high set in 73 games last season (5-13-18).

TOP OUTPUT: The Panthers’ top line of Fleischmann-Weiss-Versteeg has failed to register a point in each of the last two games, only doing so eight times this season when Florida scores and 11 games overall where the line hasn’t been on the score sheet. The trio has accounted for 43 of the team's 105 goals this season (41.0%) and 105 (43-62-105) of the team's 283 points (105-178-283), good for 37.1% of Florida’s offensive output. Weiss is T-26th in the NHL with a +14 rating, while Versteeg is T-39th with a +12 rating.
 
HELP FROM THE POINT: Florida defensemen have contributed 94 points (21-73-94) on the season, ranked fourth in the NHL for most points from blueliners. Jason Garrison leads the NHL ingoals by defensemen with 11, Brian Campbell is second among defensemen with 30 assists, while Dmitry Kulikov’s 20 points (3-17-20) are T-22nd among all NHL defensemen.
 
VETERAN SIGNING: The Panthers addedthree-time Stanley Cup champion John Madden to their roster Wednesday. The 38-year-old becomes the oldest Panther in the locker room, having played for three NHL teams: New Jersey, Chicago and Minnesota. He recorded two shots in 12:18 TOI in his first game with the Panthers Friday.
